Miwa is an internationally recognized animator, designer, and multi-media artist based in Los Angeles. She creates animated short films as well as live works that integrate animation, performance, and video installation. Her work explores how animation transforms when it is combined with body and space (and vice-versa). In her video installations, animation takes on a more physical and present quality, while body and space take on a more fantastical quality. Miwa’s work exists in a juxtaposition of illusion and non-illusion. Her performance can be viewed as a cinematic experience, with everything seen on screen as a collapsed product of multiple layers of animation, objects and body. Miwa received her MFA in Experimental Animation and Integrated Media at the California Institute of the Arts. She is a founding-member and core-collaborator of the performance media group, Cloud Eye Control, who makes theatrical productions with cleverly integrated animation projections. Miwa’s solo works have been shown at Sundance Film Festival (Official Selection, Frontiers), TED Global (Oxford, UK), Edinburgh Festival, IMAGES (Toronto) and across North America film circuits. In 2007 she received the Student Grand Prix Award and Audience Choice Award for Best Installation at the Platform International Animation Festival. www.semihemisphere.com
